NITHI BRIDGE FATAL ACCIDENT

More than 24 people were feared dead after a Modern Coast Bus company that was heading to Mombasa from Meru on Sunday evening lost control. Eyewitnesses claimed the bus lost control, making it plunge 40m deep into the Nithi River.

Earlier today the Modern Coat Bus Company sent their condolences to the families of the deceased and wished quick recovery to the injured victims. Through a message posted this is what they said, ´We are still establishing the cause of the accident. The total number of fatalities is feared to rise as rescue operations continue to free those trapped under the wreckage and in the river´

The company however asked the deceased families and the injured ones to reach them out through 07 14 74 8895. Journalist Mutuiri Gitonga became a hero after having rescued a small boy who unfortunately died on arrival at the hospital.

By Monday midday, Eastern Regional Commissioner Evans Achok confirmed that the number of those dead has risen to 33. Six were rushed to Chogoria hospital and they are still receiving treatment. However, he indicated that the bus was ferrying 45 passengers and they have only accounted for 40.  He added saying they are planning to lift the bus from where it fell so as to be able to see if there are other passengers that were trapped under the bus.

The NTSA suspended all operations carried by the Modern Coast Bus Company due to the fatal accident that occurred late yesterday.
