WILLIAM SAMOEI RUTO
William
Samoei Ruto was born on 21st December 1966 in Sambut Village, Uasin
Gishu County.
William
Ruto went to Kerotet Primary School for his primary education. He later joined
Wareng Secondary School for his O levels. Later on, he joined Kapsabet High
School for his A levels which are also known as advanced levels. After having
prospered in high school, he got the chance to get himself to university. He
joined the University of Nairobi where he studied various levels and courses.
He studied
Botany and Zoology and graduated with a degree in 1990.
After
graduating in 1990, he was employed as a teacher from 1990-to 1992.
He later applied for a master’s in plant ecology
and graduated in 2011. He also got a Ph.D. which he graduated in 2018.
William
Ruto began his political career in 1997 when he became the treasurer of the YK’92
campaign and all this was during Daniel Arap Moi’s reign.
He vied for
a parliamentary seat still in 1997 and beat the famous Reuben Chesire who was
the most supported candidate by former president Arap Moi.
In 2002,
Willaim Ruto was elected to be the minister of home affairs. He ruled from
August 2002- to December 2002 during the reign of the former president Daniel
Moi.
He got elected
as KANU secretary-general in 2005 and the current president Uhuru Kenyatta was elected
as the chairman of KANU.
In 2006,
Ruto declared his presidential bid in the upcoming elections that were coming in
2007.
Unfortunately,
Ruto lost in the 2007 general elections as Mwai Kibaki became president.
However, Ruto got to be the Minister of Agriculture. This came as a result of
his studies at UON based on Botany and Zoology course and also his master’s in
plant ecology.
In April
2010, William Ruto was transferred from the Ministry of Agriculture to Higher Education
Ministry.
In December
2010, the prosecutor of the ICC announced that he was seeking to summon 6
individuals with Ruto included in regards to their involvement in the 2007-2008
general elections. Ruto was summoned with 3 summons them being, murder, forcible
transfer of population, and persecution but in April 2016, the prosecution of
Ruto was abandoned by ICC.
William
Ruto became Eldoret North mp from 2008-to 2013 when he stepped down from his
role as an Mp to take up his role as deputy president after Uhuru Kenyatta won in
the 2013 general elections.
William
Ruto once held the president position on 6th October 2014 when the
president Uhuru Kenyatta was to appear befoe ICC following his 5 charges in
relation to the 2007-2008 election violence but the prosecutor withdrew the
charges.
William
Ruto has been the deputy president since 2013 when Uhuru Kenyatta won the elections
and also in 2017. This makes William Ruto the 11th Deputy President
after Oginga, Murumbi, Moi, Kibaki, Karanja, Saitoti, Mudavadi, Wamalwa, Mody
Awori, Kalonzo, and now William Ruto.
Currently,
William Ruto is vying for the presidential seat being the party leader of UDA.
