SECURITY ON PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES

Presidential campaigns are one of the critical campaigns that are always seen happening in Kenya. After the Independent Electoral and Boundaries commission clears a candidate,  that is after having met the requirements, the constitution states that they are entitled to be guarded and protected.

The acting inspector general sets aside several police officers cutting across all the departments that are the General Service Unit, the Kenya Police, the Administration police, and the prison service. All this will be distributed among the qualified presidential candidates and their deputy presidential candidates to protect them from anyone or any harm that will befall them.

With the ongoing general elections, Inspector General Hillary Mutyembai has set aside over 200 bodyguards that will be assigned to all the presidential candidates. The presidential candidates together with their deputy president aspirants will all be liable to 10 bodyguards each. They will cut across protecting them in everything they do and also to the places they go to. Starting from the campaigns they hold bodyguards will be around, their houses will be guarded and also their business places are liable to getting security.

According to the general elections regulations gazetted by the commission chair Wafula Chebukati on January 20th, the vetting of presidential aspirants will run from May 29th to 6th June. From there the bodyguards will now be distributed to all qualified candidates for the rest of the two months till when the general elections take place.

It is a mandate that all presidential candidates be protected, and if by bad luck the presidential aspirant dies before the general elections then the general elections will be forwarded for two months from the starting on the day of elections.

The constitution in article 138 (8b) defines more about the presidential elections which states that the presidential election shall be canceled and a new election held if: -

-A candidate for elections as president or deputy president dies on or before the scheduled election date or a candidate who would have been entitled to be declared elected as president dies before being declared elected as president.
